MLS Officially Announces Historic Switch to European-Style Fall-to-Spring Calendar Starting in 2027

In a historic turning point for North American soccer, Major League Soccer (MLS) has officially announced a structural shift to align its schedule with top European leagues. Starting with the 2027/28 campaign, the season will run from mid-July 2027 through May 2028, featuring a winter break from mid-December to early February. This strategic evolution aims to streamline player transfers, harmonize schedules with international tournaments, and boost the global profile of MLS.

To facilitate the transition, the league will introduce a shortened "Sprint Season" from February to May 2027. This transitional phase will consist of 14 regular-season matches per team within their respective conferences—playing each opponent once at home and once away—culminating in playoffs and the MLS Cup final in May.
